John Smith's Brewers Trophy
Sunday 12th February 2012
Irvine Sports Club (Clark Drive AFC)
AYRSHIRE AFA SELECT....1 CENTRAL SCOTTISH AFL SELECT.....0
Ayrshire won the first of this season's two matches against the Central Scottish with a narrow victory at Irvine Sports Club this afternoon. Both teams were affected by call offs but the very young Ayrshire squad gained valuable experience at this level and every player deserves praise for sheer hard work and determination.
The only goal of the match came after 22 minutes thanks to an own goal when MacLeod deflected the ball past his own keeper. The Central side battled very hard to get back on level terms but resolute defending, particularly in the second half and a marvellous performance from Stewarton United's goalie Darren Wilson kept them out. Most of the goal chances fell to the Central Scottish and Wilson had to make some spectacular saves to keep Ayrshire ahead.
The Central squad were also a credit to their League and to amateur football and the scene is now set for the return match to be played at Colville Park, Motherwell on Sunday 11th March (kick-off 2.00pm). Ayrshire can expect another hard tussle but Team Manager Bruce McNaught will no doubt be demanding another fine performance from his team knowing that a win or draw would bring the Cup back to Ayrshire.
